Civil War Soldiers from Brant, Michigan

Happy 4th of July

Since the town of Brant, Michigan was created after 1776 I have decided to post the list of Civil War Soldiers that I found in the Church Centennial Book called History of Our Church and Its People by Laura E. Barnhart instead.

Let me know if there are any additions or corrections. If you have company names to add that would be great also.

  1. Cool post! I have a little bit of information you might add.

Sarrel Hill, born in Pennsylvania (likely Fallowfield, Crawford County), son of Purchase Hill and Esther (whose maiden name was probably Aldrich) served in the 6th Michigan Cavalry, Company G mustered our of Chesaning. Alexis Hill of New York served in the same company and mustered from Chesaning, I don't know if these two are connected, but they might be. Both mustered in 11th October, 1862 and mustered out at Fort Leavenworth 24th November, 1865.

In the 1870 census in Albee, Sarrel Hill's neighbor was a Sarrel Aldrich. Sarrel Aldrich's father, Jackson Aldrich, might have been closely related to Sarrel's mother (Jackson was in Crawford County, Pennsylvania in the 1850 census). Jackson served in Company L of the 3rd Michigan Cavalry also mustered from of Chesaning. Jackson died of disease on 6 July 1864 at DeVall's Bluff, AR. In the 1870 census, Sarrel Aldrich and Sarrel Hill both worked in a saw mill. Jackson lived in Brady in the 1860 census and is listed as a purchaser of a land patent in 1854 in Brant in the book, "History of Saginaw County, Michigan" published by C. C. Chapman & Co. in 1881 (page 754). The book notes that many purchasers never lived on the land they purchased.

By the way, let me know if you are interested in these families or have more information about them.
